Experimental Charcoal Making

We will be carrying out the experiment over a number of days, from Sunday 17th to Wednesday 20th of January, on a farm in the townland of Clegarrow on the Trim road just outside Enfield, in Co. Meath (see below). The site is 1 hour - 1 hr 15mins drive from Dublin city centre.

If travelling from Dublin you take the N4 routeway out of the city and travel most of the journey via the M4 motorway. Take the Kilcock-Clane exit from the motorway (Otherwise you end up paying the toll) and take the Enfield exit on this round-a-bout. Then you travel into Enfield village and at the other end of the village, after the Bridge House pub, you take the Trim road (a right turn if you’re coming from Dublin) and travel out this road for c.7km. Half way you should pass Baconstown National School on your left, then a couple of kilometres later you will pass a mechanics yard on a hard bend, again on your left, and the farmstead (painted white) is the second house on your left after this mechanics.

If you are interested in coming along to the charcoal production experiment please do contact us beforehand (this is essential). We recommend coming down on the Sunday as the initial digging, constructing and firing processes will take place on this day.
